Our Story

About La Catrina Taqueria

A passion for authentic Mexican cuisine. A dream to feed Oakland. A Catrina leading the way.

The Beginning

Where Oakland Meets
Authentic Mexico

La Catrina Taqueria was built on a simple belief: that the boldest, most authentic flavors of Mexican street food deserve a home in Oakland.

Located at 2900 Broadway in the heart of Oakland, California, we bring you the real deal — hand-crafted tacos, slow-braised birria, loaded burritos, and fresh aguas frescas made the way our grandmothers made them.

Every recipe tells a story. Every bite carries the tradition of generations of Mexican cooking — seasoned with love, served with pride, and brought to the streets of Oakland for the Bay Area to enjoy.

We named our taqueria after La Catrina — the iconic, elegantly dressed Day of the Dead figure who has become a symbol of Mexican culture, artistry, and spirit. She reminds us to celebrate life in all its flavors.

The Icon Behind the Name

Who is La Catrina?

La Catrina — originally La Calavera Garbancera — is one of Mexico's most beloved cultural icons. Created by artist José Guadalupe Posada and popularized by Diego Rivera, she is depicted as an elegant skeletal woman adorned with a flower-covered hat.

More than just a Day of the Dead symbol, La Catrina represents the idea that death is a natural part of life — and that we should celebrate every moment with joy, style, and good food. That spirit is at the heart of everything we do at La Catrina Taqueria.

When you eat with us, you're not just having a taco — you're experiencing a piece of Mexican culture, history, and tradition served up fresh in Oakland, California.
